They called her bandaid fingers
but she'd only respond to comments like
who actually counts dots on ceiling tiles even if you're in a dentist chair
She tells me that they're plucking up the days up like Pick-Up-Stix
They being; everyone but me and you, she said
and they're prickling the back of her knees
and they're pricking the pads of her fingers
Have I fallen through Cloud City she asks
She knew they couldn't jostle a single day below the pile
with any of their big plans that sticky lips promise in the solidarity of immediate company
While I'm winding chords of gauze around the hollows of her hands
and her skeleton prods the sheets with its bumps she wonders why everyone is so ready for these days to end
because to get there is to get away
because isn't there something backhanded in any word following 'almost'
almost done almost over almost gone
Bandaid fingers sticking her hands to me with a five finger discount
You and me, she holds
Are not going anywhere
Let the sticks sink into the carpet and we'll lie down with them
