the years of l'entre deux guerres

We can hardly stand the wait

without any footing

he sidesteps my chiseled aloofness

don't look so happy he says to me

my arms in the sink swirl and pout

and I am not unamused

he sings as he walks away

me I want a hula hoop

such stupid things snag themselves between our brain and mouth
