Some revisions/extensions of
"Brew"
a heavy look drips between us
and leaves a ring under our coffee
you shift your eyes
and covertly sop it up with your sleeve
you told me
you were ready
that you'd been ready
but we were talking about leaving
and I grind my teeth
this is how I get those headaches:
my misspelled name on the coffee cup
arguing with you about Shakespeare’s life as Marlowe
nothing is that complicated you tell me
some people are given away
by their words
by their variations on ways to describe love
meanwhile my heart is an old dwarf or little clown
depending on who I’m reading this week
but there are no words left in my fist for you
